What's Going On?

How is "The Economy" treating you?  Is now the time to start a community store, or co-operative store?  The answer is a resounding "YES!".  Now is the time to embrace the concept and give Stafford the opportunity to position itself favorably for a future with good community fiscal health.
A co-operative would offer residents good quality clothing, household items, possibly school or scouting uniforms, and even a quality local fine arts and crafts/gift section without the drive time and wear on your precious family vehicle.  Our store, because it would belong to our community, would be the best in destination shopping.  An event rather than an errand.
Let's make this store a reality now.  Volunteer, contact us, lend your expertise, buy a share in Stafford Outfitters.

A letter from the Chair

Hello and welcome to the newly construced web site for Stafford Outfitters, Connecticut's first community-owned store intiative.  The pages herein, engagingly designed by Dave Mercier, Jeremy White, and John Rockatuie of Ring Associates in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, are intended to invite you, the inquirer, into a whole new realm of shopping - one designed and operated for you, by you - the citizens of Stafford, Connecticut and its surrounding towns and cities.
On behalf of the Stafford Outfitters Steering Committee and the Stafford Outfitters pro-tem Board of Directors, I humbly thank all of our constituents for your financial and volunteer support.  Without YOU we would not be where we are today.
Please join our community - all are welcome!

Still in the game

In recent months, our pro tem Board of Directors, consisting of the following distinguished  members:  Edward Muska, Esq. (Chairperson); Rep. Penny Bacchiochi; Barbara Frassinelli; Justin Murphy, Esq.; and myself  (Nancy Neff) have decided that there is enough of a need for a department store in the town of Stafford to continue moving forward with our project.  We are pleased to announce that we have, once again, teamed up with the Cooperative Development Institute (CDI) who assisted us with obtaining grant money. Since Stafford Outfitters is now incorporated, we are nearly ready to begin the process of procuring startup capital by offering shares to the citizens of Connecticut.

Project Background

When the National Store of Stafford Springs closed in 1990 it was a great loss to the community.  Particularly hard hit were those who lacked reliable transportation to reach out of town shops.  The National had offered a wide variety of products such as notions, health & beauty aids, hardware, and clothing of all sizes and styles.  Closing this store eliminated 70 plus jobs.  Soon after a Big Wheel Department store was constructed and operated in town for approximately six years.  When it closed 25 - 30 jobs were lost.
